JHS invites area veterans to ceremony to share experiences and advice – WLDS
Jacksonville High School invites all area veterans to attend a special assembly tomorrow in honor of Veterans Day. The assembly will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the JHS Auditorium.
JHS school counselor Sherri McLaughlin said all area veterans and current Army soldiers and sailors are welcome to come and share their experiences with the students. She says the ceremony will be kicked off by the Color Guard and the JHS students: “At 2:00 pm our junior class, they are the ones who study civics and US history, will be invited to our assembly. annual Veterans Day. Our local [military] recruiters will present the color guard presentation. The JHS Band will participate. Our madrigal choir will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and our junior American Sign Language students will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner”.
McLaughlin says Principal Joey Dion will give a brief welcome, followed by Civics Department Chairman Travis Brockschmidt, explaining the meaning and providing a brief description of Armistice Day. Guest speaker, Staff Sergeant Riley Noon will discuss his deployments to Afghanistan and Africa. McLaughlin says the next element of the program will then be followed by local veterans who wish to share their stories: They could have fought, and we will honor them at that time.
The afternoon will end with a take-out cookie and punch reception at JHS Media Center around 3pm.
McLaughlin says it’s important for students to hear testimonials from local veterans: “We would just like as many local veterans to be able to attend. I think it’s important for our students to see the men and women in our community who have served our country and are currently serving our country, and their reasons for making those choices. I think it’s time for us to really say ‘thank you’. I really hope people can attend and join us.
