IIT Roorkee, IISc Bangalore, C-DAC Develop India’s First Quantum Computing Simulator Toolkit
The Indian government’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Friday launched the country’s first “Quantum Computer Simulator (QSim) Toolkit”. QSim is a one-of-a-kind locally developed toolkit intended to be an essential tool for learning and understanding the practicalities of programming using quantum computers.
This is the country’s first collaborative initiative in this area, brought together by IISc Bangalore, IIT Roorkee and C-DAC to address the common challenge of advancing the frontiers of quantum computing research in India. It will enable researchers and students to research quantum computing in a cost-effective manner.
Quantum computing is a rapidly emerging computing paradigm that can perform a variety of tasks with greater speed and efficiency than today’s digital computers by harnessing the power of quantum mechanics. In fields such as cryptography, computational chemistry, and machine learning, quantum computing promises exponential growth in computing power.
The project was conceptualized through a multi-institutional approach by IISc Bengaluru, IIT Roorkee and C-DAC as participating agencies. It was supported and funded by MeitY. QSim enables researchers and students to write and debug quantum code essential for the development of quantum algorithms.
QSim allows researchers to explore quantum algorithms under idealized conditions and helps them arrange for experiments to run on real quantum hardware. QSim can serve as an essential educational / research tool providing a great way to attract students / researchers in the field of quantum technology. The toolkit creates a platform that helps students and users learn the skills of “programming” and “designing” real quantum hardware.
As part of the “Design and Development of Quantum Computing Toolkit (Simulator, Workbench) and Capacity Building” project, the IIT Roorkee team helped teams from the Indian Institute of Science, CDAC-Bangalore, CDAC-Hyderabad , to provide expertise in quantum computing and development of programs to be tested and implemented on the toolbox. One of the unique features of QSim is its intuitive user interface, which offers a robust quantum computer simulator integrated with a graphical user interface-based Workbench to create quantum programs and visualize the simulated outputs of instantaneous circuit generation.
Recognizing the institution’s achievements nationwide, Professor Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director of IIT Roorkee, said: “IIT Roorkee will continue to play an active role in teaching and research in quantum computing. . The quantum simulator launched today is poised to be a key catalyst in this direction. “
As part of the promotion of research and studies in quantum computing, IIT Roorkee recently offered two introductory quantum computing courses. The first course was launched by the E & ICT academy on October 20 and was attended by more than 400 participants from various backgrounds, of which 165 participants obtained certificates from the academy. The second course was offered to scientists and officials from various government agencies and laboratories on March 21 and was attended by nearly 100 participants.
